When a card is worth it
The fee usually beats the reward, except when it unlocks a sign-up bonus. Example: someone who already puts $1,000 a month on a card could pay 1 mortgage payment of $2,000 by card for about $61 in fees, reach the Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus, and keep about $594 after fees and the annual fee. Then switch back to the bank account. Run your own numbers.

Branch payments are accepted, but it is not stated whether cards or cash are allowed at the branch.
